Microsoft word Interface and its Components

Word Processing Basics

Word Processing is application software which is used to manipulate the text or words like letter drafting, paragraph composing and so on. Here we will discuss about Microsoft Word, Word Processing software. Microsoft word is application of Microsoft Office suite which has a large number of earlier and latest version. Here we will discuss about only Microsoft Word  2003,2007 and 2010. The latest version of Microsoft office is Office 2016.

Microsoft Word 2007/2010

Opening Word Processing Package


To Open Microsoft Office Word, do the following Steps:-

Start>>All Programs>>Microsoft Office>>Microsoft Word 2003/2003/2010

The Document window contains a number of components that are described as –

Title Bar


The blue strip at the top of the screen that displays the name of the document. And minimize, restore, maximize and close buttons are right side on this bar.

Insertion Point

The flashing vertical line that indicates where the text will appear when you type.

Menu Bar/Tabs


A group of commands, including file, edit, view, that allow the user to perform tasks; typically located at the top of the screen.

Status Bar


The bar at the bottom of the screen that shows information about the page, section line, and location of the insertion point. Information about Macro recording (REC), Track change (TRK), Extended Selection (EXT), Over Typing (OVR), Spelling and Grammar, and Background save etc. also shows on this bar.

Ruler Bar


The bar at the top (Horizontal) and side (Vertical) of the page that shows the margin, Indent and tab settings (on the horizontal ruler). Indent is used for word wrapping setting. There are three type of indent (Left,Right and First line).

Window Split button

The window split button is situated on the top of the vertical scroll bar. This button is used for the spit of the current document window.

Browse Object Button


This button is situated on the bottom of the vertical scroll bar and used for browse the object in the file like comment, end note, footnote, field, table, graphics etc.

Work Space


It is a working space of MS word where we create document, table images etc.

Mouse Pointer

Mouse pointer charges shape when it passes over certain part of the Word document window.

View Buttons


Five view buttons are Normal view , Web Layout view, Print Layout view , Outline view, Reading Layout view. The view buttons are at the right of the Horizontal scroll bar. Vertical ruler is present only in print layout. Reading and outline view having no any ruler. In outline view outlining toolbar appear, having promote, demote, move up , move down, collapse all and expand all button etc. the tab button is used to promote the level and shift+tab is for demote the level. Reading layout having only vertical scroll bar.

Task pane/Navigation pane


A window in left side of the page having commands for quick use of the running task. By default the 'Getting started Task pane' appears. Shortcut key of Task pane is Ctrl+F1. In Word 2010, It is know as Navigation pane what contains all the document objects and provide assistance too.
