Each time, the heart pumps the blood out, it rushes through the arteries and produces a twitching movement or throbbing called pulse. Each heart beat causes a pulse in the artery. The pulse can be felt at various places on the body, viz , inner wrist, neck, temple.

The number of pulse beats per minute is called pulse rate.

For a normal resting person, the pulse rate usually lies between 72 to 80 pulse/beats per minute. Generally, pulse rate is measured by feeling the pulse at inner wrist. Pulse rate increases  with physical exercise.

Heart rate, Heart Beat ,Pulse rate are alternative names.

How to measure the heart beat and pulse rate


Materials required


Stethoscope, stopwatch (or digital watch).

Procedure


Follow the steps described below:

For measuring Heart Beat Rate

  • Take a stethoscope (or the model of stethoscope you have prepared).
  • Place the chest piece of the stethoscope (or rubber sheet side of the funnel) on your chest slightly on the left side near the heart.
  • Count the heart beats (thumping sound) that take place in one minute.
  • Run for about 5 min. and again count the heart beat that take place in one minute.

For measuring Pulse Rate

  • Place the middle and the index fingers of your right hand on the inner side of your left wrist.
  • Have a feel of throbbing movements.
  • Count the number of throbbing that take place in one minute. This is the pulse rate.
  • Now run for about 5 min and measure the pulse rate.
  • Measure the heart beat rate and pulse rate of your friends under the rest and after running conditions.
  • Record your own and your friends pulse rate and heart beat rate and explain the results.
