what is internet and its basic history

INTERNET

The Internet is a very large computer network that connects  millions of computers globally .
 By using the Internet, users can communicate and share the information from any part of the world. 

People also use the Internet for searching the information, online chatting, buying and selling goods, sending greeting cards and for some other  tasks. Internet is also called net.

HISTORY OF THE INTERNET         

The Internet had its roots during the 1960’s as a project of the United States government’s Department of Defence, to create a non-centralized network. 

This project was called ARPANET ( Advanced Research Projects Agency Network, created by the Pentagon’s Advanced Research Projects Agency established in 1969 to provide a secure communications network for organizations that were engaged in defence –related  research. 

The network connected one computer in California with three in Utah. This was the first step towards the creation of the Internet.

To speed up the network connection, the National Science Foundation (NSF) established five super computing centres in 1986 for creating the NSnet backbone. 

The NSFnet continued to grow and became a very large network, known as Internet.
