Introduction of Computer Network and its Advantages

               Now a days, many departments are using computerized systems instead of manual ones. When several computers and other devices such as printer are connected to each other through a medium, for the purpose of transmission of data from one place to another in a secure manner then this arrangement is called a network. 

A network provides facility of communicating data and information between different departments  in an organization . Computerization of banks is an example of this. Another important advantage of networking is that it allows resources such as printer, scanner, modem etc. to be shared among all the systems connected to the network . 

Thus user on the second floor of building can use the printer on the eleventh floor if their computers and printers are connected to  the network. This concept of connected computers sharing resources is called networking.

          Computer networks provide many services besides travel reservations and financial transactions, but these applications show two important features of computer networks:

1. They provide shared access to information, such as account balances or airline flight status.

2.They allow the movement of data such as flight status updates , or financial transfers.

Advantages of Networking

Networking serves four important purposes:

Resource Sharing

It allows departments to share hardware e.g., if there is only one laser printer in a company then networking allows each department’s computer to use this  laser printer.

Reliability

A file can have copies on two or three different machines, so if one of them is unavailable (hardware crash), the other copies could be used. For military, banking, air reservation and many other applications it is of great importance.

Cost Factor

Another advantage is saving money. Personal computers have better price/performance ratio than Mainframe computers. So it is better to have PCs, one per user, with data stored on one shared bite server machine.

Communication Medium

Using a network, it is possible for 3 managers, working far apart,  to prepare financial report of the  company. The charges at one end can be immediately noticed at another and hence it speeds  up co-operation among them. Services like electronic mail being offered by computer networks, allow much more efficient  communication among individuals.
