Characteristics of Computer?

Computers play a vital role in processing of data in an organization. Computers help in processing volumes of data efficiency and accurately within a short span of time. A computer has the following characteristics which makes it vitally important for an organization:

characteristics of computer

(1) Speed:

A computer is so fast that it can perform the given task in a few seconds as compared to man who will have to spend many months for doing the same volume of task.

(2) Accuracy:

While doing calculations, a computer is more accurate than a man. Man can make mistakes in calculations but a computer does not, if it is provided with accurate instructions.

(3) High memory:

A computer has much more memory or storage capacity than human beings. It can store millions of data and instructions, which can be retrieved and recalled even after a number of years. This is not possible in case of human brain.

(4) No Intelligence:

A computer is a machine and obviously has no intelligence of its own. Each and every instruction must be given to the computer for doing a task. .Man has intelligence and it is the man who invented computer and who gives it all the instructions and logic to work. The main drawback of computer is that it cannot take decisions on its own.

(5) Diligence:

A computer does not suffer from the human traits of tiredness and boredom. Man may be tired and bored while doing millions of calculations but computer. being a machine, does this job very efficiently and without any sign of tiredness and boredom.

(6) No Feelings:

Computers are devoid of emotions. They have no feelings and no instincts because they are machine. Although men have succeeded in building a memory for the computer, but no computer possesses the equivalent of a human heart and soul.

Based on our feelings, taste, knowledge, and experience , we often make certain judgments in our day to day life; but computers cannot make such judgments on their own.Their judgment is based on the instructions given to them in the form of programs that are written by us.They are only as good as man makes and uses them.

(7) Versatility:

Versatility is one of the most wonderful things about the computer. One moment , it is preparing the results of particular examination, the next moment it is busy preparing electricity bills, and in between , it may be helping an office secretary to trace an important letter in seconds.

All that is required to change its talent is to slip in a new program  (a sequence of instructions for the computer) into it. Briefly, a computer is capable of performing almost any task provided that the task can be reduced to a  series of logical steps.
