Types of Transmission (Mode) – Simplex, Serial and Parallel Transmission

Simplex

In simplex transmission one of the communicating device can only send data. It is a one way transmission it means when one device send data then other device only receive. It is also known as a uni-directional mode of transmission . In this one device is transmitter and other is receiver.

    Example- Radios, Television

    Half –Duplex


    Half-Duplexrefers to two-way communication where only one party can transmit data at a time. Half-Duplex provide the simplex –transmission in both direction in a single channel.



    Example-E-mail, Fax, Messaging, Wacky-Talky

    Full-Duplex


    Full-Duplexrefers to the transmission of data in both direction simultaneously . Were both devices are capable of sending as well as receiving data at a same time. It is a by-directional transmission.

    As- Telecommunication service.

    Serial Transmission


    In serial communication used in telecommunication where in data transfer occurs by transmitting data one bit a time in sequential order. Overall computer bus or communication channel. It is simplest form of communication between a sender and receiver. It is considered best for long distance communication.

    ParallelTransmission


    In Parallel transmission , all bits of bytes or transmitted simultaneously on separate wire. Here multiple connection between the two devices because of this. This is a very fast method transmitting data from one place to another.

    The disadvantage of parallel transmission is that it is very expensive, as it require several wires for both sending as well as receiving equipment. The another one is it demands extra ordinary accuracy that cannot be guaranteed over long distance.

    Synchronous Transmission

    In synchronous transmission the whole block of data bits is transferred at once, instead of one character at a time. Here transmission begins  at a pre-determine, regular time, instant. A synchronous signal is used to tell a receiving station that a new frame arriving and to synchronize the receiving station.



    Asynchronous Transmission

    A asynchronous communication send individual character (bit) one at a time framed by a start bit and one or two stop bits. Each frame begins with a start bit that enable the receiving device to adjust to the timing of the transmitting signal. The message can begin at any time.

    A typical frame use to transmit a character data has four components.

    Start Bit


    Signals the starting a frame enables the receiving device to synchronize itself with the message.

    Data Bit


    Consist of 8 bit character data is being transmitted.



    Parity Bits


    It is optionally used as crewed method for deducting transmission errors.

    Stop Bit


    Signal the end of the data frame.
