What is CPU?

Input

This is the process of inserting data and program into the computer. There are some devices which helps in giving input to computer.

Storage

The process of saving data permanently is known as storing. Data has to be feed into the system before the actual processing starts. It is because the processing speed of C.P.U. is very fast.

Components of C.P.U.

1-Control Unit (C.U.)

A control unit is an internal part of C.P.U. that co-ordinates the instructions and data flow of between C.P.U. and other components of computer.

C.U. directs the operation of a C.P.U. by sending timing and control signals.

2-Arithmetical and Logical Unit (A.L.U.)

An A.L.U. is an internal electronic component of C.P.U. that performs all arithmetical (+,-,*,/) and logical (>=<) operations in a computer.

A.L.U. receives three types of signals-

1. Control signals from control unit.
2. Data to be operated.
3. Status information from operations done previously.

3-Memory Unit

The primary jobs of the memory unit is to store data or instructions and immediate results when an instructions is processed by the C.P.U. unit. The main memory or RAM stores final result before it is sent to output devices.

1-Fetch

For giving instructions to main memory.

2-Decode

Translate into computer commands.

3-Execute

Executes the instructions for output.

4-Store

Write results to main memory.

Speed of C.P.U.

C.P.U. clock speed or clock rate is measured in Hertz, generally in Gigahertz (GHz) . A C.P.U. is clock speed rate is measure of how many clock cycles. A C.P.U. can perform in a second.
