E-mail Protocols –SMTP, POP3, IMAP, MIME




    SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol)


    SMTP stands for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. It is TCP/IP protocol that specifies how computer exchange electronic mail. It works with post office protocol. It provides the ability to send and receive e-mail message.

    E-mail Protocols –SMTP, POP3, IMAP, MIME


    SMTP is an application layer protocol that enables the transmission and delivery of e-mail over the Internet. SMTP is created and maintained by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). It is also known as RFC 821 and RFC 2821SMTP is generally integrated with an e-mail client application and it's composed of four key component.

    • Local user or client-end utility known as mail user agent.
    • Server known as mail submission agent (MSA).
    • Mail Transfer Agent (MTA).
    • Mail delivery agent (MDA).

    SMTP works by initiating a session between the user and the server, where MTA and MDA provide domain searching and local delivery services.

    POP3 (Post Office Protocol-3)


    It is a simple protocol used for opening remote e-mail boxes. Post Office Protocol provide mechanism for storing message sent to each user and received by SMTP in a respectable called a mail box rectangle. A POP3 server store message for each user until the user connects to download and read them using a POP3 client such as Microsoft , outlook express, Microsoft mail and news.

     Merits of POP3

    • One of the advantage is that once the message is delivered and message can be read by user then after time for read this message internet connection is not necessary.
    • It is a very popular e-mail protocol which are support all e-mail clients.
    • E-mail is not stored on the server, so your disk uses on the server is less.

    Demerits of POP3

    • Can be match slower to check mails.
    • Much harder to do server site filtering.
    • Mail is inaccessable from other machine.

    IMAP (Interactive Mail Access Protocol)



    This protocol design to helped users who needs to use different types of computers say as – laptop computer, hand-held computer, while on the move and a workstation while in the office or at home. "This protocol is basically ment for the e-mail server that can be access from any machine." IMAP also has the ability to process the specified mail.

    MIME (Multiple-Purpose Internet Mail Extension)



    It is widely use internet for encoding binary files to send them as e-mail attachment over the Internet. MIME allows e-mail message to contain a non ASCII file such as : videos, audios, images, graphics, sound etc. and it provide a mechanism to transfer non-text character to text characters. The MIME extension are implemented as fields within the e-mail message header. 

    These field define the following-
    • Content type
    • Content transfer encoding method.
    • MIME version
    • Content ID (optional)
    • Content description (optional)

    E-mail Encryption


    Encryption means changing the standard code into a different code which is understood by the receiver. It encryption protect data when it travel across a cable or telephone line. Using encryption method sender can change the original data in some other code and should give the decode method to the receiver. Some other means other than e-mail.
