Output and Input Devices with examples | Computer Basics

In this post we discuss about  Input and Output Devices with examples because if we don't know about input or output devices of computer then we can't describe or understand in basic computer learning. It is main topic to introduce computer and its devices.

What is Output Devices?

With the help of output devices, we get the processed data. Output Devices give results in either hard copy or soft copy. The output devices help the computer to communicate with user by converting the electric signals to human understandable signals.

Examples of output devices

  1. Monitor
  2. Speaker
  3. Plotter
  4. Printers

1. Monitor or VDU (Visual Display Unit)

Monitor is a device to interact with the computer. The messages from computer are displayed on the screen of the monitor. It is the most common output device use a Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) to produce images. Images are formed by collection of spots, each known as Pixel.

It is also known as VDU (Visual Display Unit). A unit monitor is a screen which is used to display result.

Classification of Monitors

Different Types of Monitor are-

  1. CRT (Cathode Ray Tube)-Monochrome,Colour
  2. TFT (Thin film transistor)
  3. LCD (Liquid Crystal Display
  4. LED (Light Emitting Diode)

Monitor Terms and Properties

A - Resolution

The number of pixels that make up the screen. The examples are CGA (Colour Graphic Adapter), EGA ( Enhanced Graphic Adapter), VGA (Video Graphic Array  Adapter), SVGA (Super video Graphic Array Adapter), CGA having the least resolution and SVGA the highest resolution.

B - Color Facilities

Monochrome- Single color display on a black background.

Color monitors Which can display multicolored outputs by combining red, green and blue in varying intensities.

2-Printers

A printer is a device that can record information permanently on paper in the form of printed copies. It produces a hard copy. The resolution of printer is expressed as Dpi (Dot per inch).

3-Plotter

Plotter is an output device that is used to produce graphical outputs on the paper. It uses pens, either of single color or multi-color to draw pictures. Engineering designs can be printed with good precision by making use of plotters.

There are two types of plotters-
  1. Drum Plotter
  2. Flat bed Plotter

Applications of Plotters

  1. Computer –Aided Design (CAD)
  2. Map drawing
  3. Architectural Drafting.
  4. General Business Applications.

Speaker

Speaker is also an output device. It gives output as sound energy.

INPUT UNIT OR INPUT DEVICES

Input unit is a link between user and computer. It takes the input from the user and converts it into a form understandable by the computer. It consists of input devices attached to the computer which feeds the data and instructions into the computer. Examples of input devices:

1. Keyboard

2. Mouse

3. Scanner

4. Light Pen

5. Optical Character Reader (OCR)

6.  Magnetic Ink Character Reader (MICR)

1. Keyboard

The Keyboard is one of the most common input devices for computer. The layout of the keyboard is like that of the traditional QWERTY typewriter.  Different type of keys of a keyboard are as follows:

a.            Alphabetical keys (A to Z, a to z)
b.            Numeric keys (0 to 9)
c.             Function keys (F1 to F12)
d.            Special keys (@,!,#,$,%,^,.&,*,= ,etc.)
e.            Cursor control keys (space bar, left arrow ,right arrow, up and down arrow etc.)

2. Mouse

A mouse is a pointing device used while working with a display based package. It is a push-button control device that eliminates the need to type computer commands. Instructions are given  by the user to the computer by pointing an arrow on the screen to a picture  or word and then pushing the button on the mouse. The user moves the arrow on the screen by sliding the mouse across the desktop. It is used for selection, dragging, drawing, playing games, etc.

3. Scanner

Scanner is used to convert photographs and other images from documents and drawing into electronic form. The scanner is used to scan the images and store them on the disk, as a file.

4. Light Pen

A light pen is an electronic device in the form of a photo-diode , that allows the operator to identify a particular point or character displayed on the screen, and can be used alone or in conjunction with a keyboard to add, rearrange or delete information, modify images displayed on the screen.

5. MICR

Today banks are issuing special types of cheques. These cheques have the cheque number printed by special magnetic ink. The cheque clearance is done using computers . There is a special device called MICR. It directly reads the cheque number, bank code, branch code etc. and converts it in machine readable form.

6. OCR

Optical Character Reader is an information processing device that converts typed or hand written data in a form that computer understands. It’s speed ranges from 50 to 3000 characters per second.
